Air vs sea freight: choosing the right mode for your cargo
Every importer eventually faces the same question: is the speed of air freight worth the premium? The answer depends less on the rate per kilo and more on what the cargo is doing while it travels.
When air freight pays for itself
Fast-moving consumer goods, seasonal stock, spare parts for production lines and high-value electronics often justify air freight because the cost of waiting exceeds the freight difference. If a delayed shipment means a stalled factory or an empty shelf, sea freight is a false economy.
When sea freight wins
For dense, non-perishable cargo and planned replenishment, ocean freight remains the most economical choice per cubic meter. Consolidation (LCL) makes it viable for smaller importers who cannot fill a container.
